The much anticipated NACS Show in Chicago, Ill is October 4-7, 2008 at the McCormack Place. What are your expectations of this show as you prepare for the show? What do you think of the scheduled workshops?  Will you attend the workshops? As the show passes tell us your thoughts of the show? Did it meet your expectations? What did you think of the host city, Chicago? Has some great restaurants. What did you think of the layout? What are your thoughts on the tobacco category after attending the show? Share your thoughts! Prior, during and after the show!

TR’s show in Sao Paulo Brazil scheduled for October 14-16 is to be moved to Rio de Janeiro.

Provisionally it wil now be held at the Intercontinental Hotel Rio de Janeiro October 15-17.

The format has also been changed and it is proposed to be now more of an industry discussion / forum event.

Of course there will be plenty of opportunties for networking as well over the three days.

The Intercontinental is located in Sao Conrado (beach) and is a little outside the grand bustle of Rio.

The TMA conference in Williamsburg VA wound up today. It was a big success.

A constructive diaglogue has really begun and can only improve.

We welcome the opportunity to engage with the public health community in a constructive conference.

Well done TMA for putting together this successful forum.   

Hat’s off to World Tobacco for their Show and good organization held in Puerto Vallarta Mexico April 16/17.

The Hotel and arrangements were well chosen and it was noted this was the first exhibition in Latin America – an important tobacco region -mostly ignored by show organizers.

The show itself was small and more significantly lightly attended. It will be hard to see how exhibitors recouped their costs.

Why is this?

Most obviously is the saturation level of “global” tobacco exhibitions – there are just too many shows and insufficient time in between to have anything new.

So what next?

The Tobacco Reporter show, planned for Sao Paulo Brazil in October will be moved to Rio (same dates) and its format modified.

There will not be a show, and the event will be more networking  and discussion / debate oriented. There are many significant topics for debate. At the same time there will be ample opportunitiy for peer meetings and business.

We applaud Tobacco Reporter’s pro-active approach.   

The “city that never sleeps” once again hosts a show that I have personally always looked forward to attending as a tobacco buyer & marketer. The Tobacco Plus Expo once only permitted tobacco shop owners admittance but today it welcomes all channels of trade.

I once again look forward to attending the show. I encourage those who sell tobacco products to attend this show. Please make sure you look for Chris & I at the show. The lineup of speakers looks impressive! And it will be interesting to attend the “Exhibitor Presentation Theater”. I can’t wait to see what’s new! 

The best part of this show I believe is always THE PEOPLE!

Well, if your not going to the show you will most likely miss something! I hear there are some very interesting developments in the industry that will be unveiled at the show!

Busy and tiring is the reality of exhibitions – but also lots of fun. It’s great to see your old friends and some new ones all in the same place. We should do it more often; if only it weren’t so darned expensive!

Some comments……….

Next time please let’s have it away from Thanksgiving. American attendance was almost zero.

Hauni, GD, and Focke were all missed and the show was poorer for their non participation.

But oh boy wasn’t the Chinese stand big and impressive.

Perhaps the show should span 3 days next time not 4.

Stands were generally of high quality and calibre – my hat’s off to all the hard work everybody put in to make it happen and attend to customers during the four days.

Attendence generally seemed light but was also patchy. Monday and Thursday were light but Tuesday and Wednesday were hectic at times.

Thanks to all the lovely ladies at Tobacco reporter – for their good cheer and wine.

Finally to the people of Paris and France – who didn’t strike or cause disruption, were kind, helpful and patient – Thank-you.

TabExpo is next week and France has thrown out the welcome mat – not.

Transport strikes are in full swing – although hopefully this will all be over – but if not, take a good pair of shoes and a raincoat.

I was told it is not yet sure if smoking will be allowed! Wasn’t this a pre-requisite to having the show in Paris?

With the show being so close to the US Thanksgiving Holiday we’re not sure how many Americans will attend – or even be able to afford to given the current exchange rate! Next time can we arrange the show so it does not conflict with national or religious holidays. I suppose it’s better than Barcelona which actually took place Thanksgiving week. As a result US attendance was slight.

Oh and most important of all – I’m told Borgwaldt will have beer on their stand. How thoughtful.

If anyone is planning on having espresso or ice cream please let me know?

You’d better be – or close to it – because before you know it you’ll be there and it will all be over for another four years!

Otherwise known as the Tobacco Olympics, not only because it happens every four years but also for the amount of time and effort required to participate. It has become a spectacularly expensive event. Is it worth it?

Some say yes – others no. What do you think?

Hauni and others have chosen not to participate as they have in the past.

Is this detrimental to the show? Or does this give other suppliers a chance?

Should we continue to hold a Tabexpo event every four years – or change fundamentally the way we go to market?
