New Partnership January 27, 2012

Okono A/S, an affiliate of Fertin Pharma A/S, has entered into an agreement with a subsidiary of Altria Group Inc., to develop innovative, non-combustible nicotine-containing products for adult tobacco consumers. This new product initiative combines the product development and manufacturing capabilities of Okono and its affiliates with the expertise of the Altria of companies.  Altria Group, Inc. is the parent company of Philip Morris USA (PM USA), U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company (UST) and John Middleton.

Very interesting development worthy of posting! What are your thoughts? Another move that furthers my belief that the world of tobacco has and is and will change to meet the needs of those who enjoy nicotine satisfaction.

Wow. First RJR and Sweden’s Nicovum partner and now Altria and Denmark’s Fertin Pharma- world’s largest manufacturer of NRT gums. Fertin already partners with GSK and Novartus and now with the world’s largest tobacco company. Look for gums coming soon. Seems to be Altria’s recognition of the fact that cigarettes are in decline.

In light of the continued accelerated decline in traditional tobacco usage one can understand these opportunities. I have see significant increase in the sales of electronic cigarettes which makes me wonder wh RJR or PM don’t enter this market! Can anyone shed some light on this thought?

RJR and PM are looking at non-traditional tobacco/nicotine delivery systems and both have filed and/or acquired patents or patent rights in these type of products. But, there remain questions about the specific e-cig technology and who owns or controls the IP. They remain wary about this. Also, e-cigs are seen as a zero sum game and it would be hard for traditional cigarette companies to enter the market with an electronic alternative and not sacrifice significant operating margins.

Being a guy that loves Snus I prefer Snus over E-Cigs. Delivers 100% of the time and all the time!
