Willie,

PM opposed FSC, as did RJR, for one reason: costs! FSC paper was 12 times higher or more when this started. PM and RJR did not mind carrying dual inventories due to the cost; however, once FSC got past the tipping point, PM decided they could profit from the technology and also drive up costs for other manufacturers, that were less able to absorb the costs than PM was.

That's the real story.

I have been sick since Christmas and have had numerous tests. going for another today. If this test comes back negative then it has to be the cigarettes. If so I will sue the tobacco industry for all I have been out and been through including ruining my vacation. I know it is my choice to smoke but not to get sick and believe me I have been sick.

After finding out today about this FSC crap, I QUIT! After that is what our government wants, with their ideas of smokers causing rising health care costs. It is obsurd that I have wondered for the past few weeks, why my cigarettes keep going out and taste stale. I thought I had bought a pack that was old, it continued after purchasing them from other stores. The fact that this was done and consumers have not been made aware of this as public knowledge, by it not being broadly reported. As a consumer, I think we should have a choice and should have been made aware of this before hand, so that everyone could make a decision as to whether or not they choose to smoke some chemical that no one knows the long term consequences. As it is known that smoking is harmful, now it is more harmful, no matter what they say. Their studies mean nothing, as years from now, it will become apparent of the long term worse effects from smoking. We as the people should have been allowed to vote on this. After all they are not putting stuff in alcohol to keep people from getting drunk, which has just as many ill effects on health as well as DUI's with drunk drivers killing more people than cigarettes. I resent our government and feel that I am now living a communist country. Our govenment to me is now compared to that of China. The tobacco farmers and companies will soon be out of a job as is half of America because of our govenment and their strong relationship with China, lets all make China richer and build their economy while ours collapses. And now, our government is too strongly influenced by the Chinese and communist ways of government.

As one who advocated Reduced Ignition Propensity cigarette legislation in many states during the past fifteen years, I disagree with Copenhagen Charlie's assertion that PM forced "this crap down our throats".

After five or six states enacted RIP laws (which PM and Reynolds aggressively opposed for many years), PM (and subsequently Reynolds) decided to no longer oppose these laws, and then they began actively campaigning to enact these law in the remaining states (to ensure that all 50 states had the same standards).

United States
All cigarettes sold in Michigan will be required to meet low ignition propensity standards and have the "Fire Safe Cigarette" (FSC) label on them effective January 1, 2010, a move aimed at reducing fire-related deaths and injuries. FSC rules will take effect in 10 other States - Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia - as of January 1st, according to http://www.firesafecigarettes.org (Grand Rapids Press 12/30)
