Why would the bureaucrats go after liquor? I thought they all relied on the bottle to get them through the day!

I too beleive flavors will be banned for all tobacco products. They will then go after flavors in alcohol.

There is no Plan B for revenue, so it will be very interesting to see how much the non smoking public is willing to be taxed to make up for the lost tobacco tax revenue.

The SCHIP & FDA will have real negative impact on the states budgets. The states counted on the excise tax revenue and now it is gone with no new source for the states to balance their budgets.

Crunch time should be around the fisrt of the year. I am going to enjoy the states discomfort, they can only raise tobacco taxes so much and it will not make up for the losses of the RYO & flavored cigarettes taxes.

The FDA will ultimately ban all flavored tobacco products, with the exception of certain pipe flavors. There will come a day in the not-so-distant future where there will be no strawberry blunts, grape cigarillos or peach little cigars. This is not a battle the industry will win.

So it was written.....

At least as far as cigarettes are concerned, there is much you can do in the primary processing to modify taste. Also, smaller manufacturers might be able to use favorful tobaccos that are in limited supply to support a uniquely flavored brand.

There are ethical components to this issue. Though the argument is that flavour is what draws new users, it is true that as with any other products, adults enjoy flavours. What these moves are saying is that you can still smoke but we are going to make sure you don't enjoy it. This would be absurd in any other area; try to reduce fast food consumption by outlawing tastiness or alcohol consumption by making sure nothing is much more than drinkable.

Its kind of odd that in a society that seems to spend most of its effort increasing pleasure in most everything that here the opposite is taking place.

And here is the TALLY!

The New York City Council on October 14th voted 46-1 for a measure sponsored by Councilmember Joel Rivera that will ban the sale of all flavored tobacco products, including chewing tobacco, cigars and cigarillos, in the city, going a step beyond the Food and Drug Administration's ban on flavored cigarettes that took effect on September 22nd. (Gotham Gazette 10/15)
