Tobacco Plus Expo 08

The “city that never sleeps” once again hosts a show that I have personally always looked forward to attending as a tobacco buyer & marketer. The Tobacco Plus Expo once only permitted tobacco shop owners admittance but today it welcomes all channels of trade.

I once again look forward to attending the show. I encourage those who sell tobacco products to attend this show. Please make sure you look for Chris & I at the show. The lineup of speakers looks impressive! And it will be interesting to attend the “Exhibitor Presentation Theater”. I can’t wait to see what’s new!

The best part of this show I believe is always THE PEOPLE!

Well, if your not going to the show you will most likely miss something! I hear there are some very interesting developments in the industry that will be unveiled at the show!

Give us your thoughts? Why are you going? Why aren’t you going?

What did you like? What did you not like?

What you think of the seminars? What you think of Exhibitor Presentation Theater?

Anything really impress you?

Share your thoughts.

Well, Chris & I hope to see you!

Looking forward to a great show. Love how condensed this show is as I can go for two days and see the old and new plus mingle with old friends and new!

I found the show to be a bit smaller this year but it was well worth the trip. The highlight I found at the show was the obvious move forward by Commonwealth/Davidoff as supported by ITC. I still find it interesting that RAI avoids this show as in the past it was a channel that helped support their volume. It would seem to me that with how they are losing volume and share that they would look at any possible way to secure volume.

I was amazed to find several other players getting into the snus business.
Liggett Vector was exhibiting, Nordic had their versions and I saw where the folks who make Blunt Wraps ub rge mix as well as the folks from American Smokeless Tobacco. Found AST packing to be quite unique.
I quess folks are convinced that consumers are going to use snus.

I found the conference a good deal less interesting this year than in years past with just the Convenience vs. Outlet discussion to be of interest. And the show was a good deal smaller with fewer visitors; a bunch of exhibitors were disappointed but as Cigguy writes one didn’t have the sense of having to rush through. With fewer NPM’s around, one can see the success of the public affairs move by OPM’s with equity fees and the like.

While RJR was not exhibiting they did provide lots of sponsorship dollars and I imagine that the outlets already know their products. This show is about innovation or it should be so the Ruyan e-cigarette was there among other forms of new tobacco products.

I understand that the show is on the block for a million dollars and that NATO and TobaccoExpo have separated.

I was not disappointed at all as it relates to this show. I had a very productive trip and I’m extremely excited about the business. It was great to see the new items. I was absolutely blown away by the RUYAN. I can’t wait till my wholesaler gets this product. And I was extremely interested in a snus product made by American Smokeless Tobacco that comes in a really unique resealable pouch – the product is called Discreet. I liked the product also by Nordic and by Liggett. I actually found the side presentations extremely helpful plus it gave me a time to sit.

Oh I was wondering where the Altadis group was this year? It was great to see Sandman at Rebublic and to find out that he’s making a difference and doing a great job!

Wanted to impart my thoughts on a show that I always find as informative. I walked away from this show with a glimpse of the future. New product entries as well as new players in the industry. Always felt in the past that this show gave the buyer that attended the show an advantage and I’s say this is still the case.

Anyone know what retailers have taken on the e-cigarette. Saw an article recently in the WSJ on the product. Looks like they are getting some real good press.

Altadis was no where to be found boothwise. I saw them hanging out in the hookah booth.

#11 CIG GUY on 05.31.08 at 11:01 AM

Yeah OTP Kid what was that all about and they accepted an award also. Pretty lame deal there. You know what they say out of sight out mind. Gotta think Swisher, Swedish, JM(PM) and Royal Blunt folks had a smirk on their faces. Probably will show in there business in the future. I was always under the impression that the cigar companies did exceptionally well in the tobacco outlet channel!

Neel Shah – What is your cost on liquidfied tobacco?
What can you offer?

#14 OTP Kid on 07.07.08 at 9:11 AM

To Cig Guy: I saw the Commonwealth booth, brand new and big and shiny. It might be that the reason Altadis wasn’t there was because Commonwealth spent all the show dough on their booth! I heard the parent owes a few bucks after the Altadis purchase.

I was wanting to know if any major wholesalers were carrying this product (Ruyan) as of date. Any major retailers take on the product?
