The following information was delivered to my email the other day! Tell me what your thoughts are? Is it Possible to smoke harm free? I find this extremely interesting. What are your thoughts?
Millions of consumers who smoke cigarettes are looking for acceptable alternatives to satisfy their cravings for nicotine - anyplace and anytime. Whether consumers want to avoid the harmful byproducts of smoking tobacco or consumers want to enjoy the sensation of smoking in a public place, bar or restaurant, the Ruyan Electronic Cigarette not only simulates the experience of ordinary cigarette smoking, it also delivers nicotine to the system to satisfy the craving.
The Ruyan Electronic Cigarette Offers Significant Benefits to Users:
- Free of tar and the dangers associated with the many chemicals commonly produced by a lit, ordinary cigarette
- It does not require heat or ignition by flame
- One 16 mg cartridge is equivalent on average to 20 - 30 cigarettes
- Does not produce second-hand smoke
- Not regulated by the FDA
- It can be used in most “No-Smoking” areas and poses no fire danger

I think this is outstanding. I saw this on the internet a few weeks ago and it seems like a product that could really shake up the industry. I’m looking forward to seeing this at the show in Vegas.
I will defintely check this out! They must be pretty serious as I got a brochure in the mail the other day! Wonder how the FDA views products like this? Anyone have a thought on this?
This looks like a variant on the RJR products released some time ago - Premier was one.
Apart from RJR employees I never saw it being used.
The idea was novel - it was probably safer - although this was not stated.
Has the time come for a product like this?
Is there still a psychological mystique around the actual smoking process that makes cigarettes attractive but alternatives less so?
I always recall RJR folks smoking Eclipse which I hear is possibly being revamped. I always felt it had a offensive odor but no smoke. I know they always felt it was safer since there was no smoke. I think this is pretty a pretty interesting proposition. I think it’s time has come but I wonder how the FDA will rule on a product like this? And I [ersonally think that there is a psychological process. It would seem to me that there could be incidents of confrontation as folks will be alarmed at someone using a product like this. Also are their possibilities that others see someone using this product and they just light up? I also think that there is also a definite social aspect of smoking that is missed by some of the new alternatives.
So what’s with all of this electronic gadgetry out there? Today’s TMA summary reports that “US-based ParaFin Corp, which recently acquired exclusive North American distribution rights for the electronic Rauchless smoke-free cigarette brand, announced that certain design changes to the product would result in a cost reduction of around 35% in the manufacturing process. And “Rutoo BV, a Dutch supplier of electronic cigarettes also named Rutoo, said April 1st that its products are gaining popularity in the United Kingdom due to the smoking ban.”
Is this Nicotine Replacement Therapy? Pretty soon Big Pharma and New Tobacco will be indistinguishable.
How does a electronic cigarette work? Does it really deliver the hit of tobacco? Anyone try one?
Yes, it is a nicotine delivery device that is marketed not as a medical device but as a product that can be consumed where smoking is not allowed. There is a throw-away cigarette version and a cigar version with a replaceable cartridge. An amazing product that even releases a vapor on exhale to give the sense of smoking.
We stopped by the booth at the Tobacco Plus Expo and saw this product and were absolutely amazed at it’s performance. The cigar was actually even more interesting than the cigarette as it was disposable and the equivalent to a carton of cigarettes. Smoking with no smoke and from what I would figure has to be missing the harmful toxins. We are hoping that the folks at Ruyan will let our stores market the product as we were told they are not letting everyone have the product. Amazing invention!
I too was extremely favorably impressed, both with the product and the president. Tobacco companies are getting hammered, however, by the health groups who complain that alternative products are designed, not to help smokers quit, but as a device that can be used when they can’t smoke. In many ways this is how the smokeless folks are selling smokeless to cigarette consumers. And Ruyan is doing the same, all to avoid FDA actions e.g., on nico water etc. At some point, FDA needs to allow honest comment by purveyors of alternative nicotine products.

I think folks need to keep pushing the needle as fast as possible from all angles! Keep fighting the FDA reg deal so the public can get some exposure to the new alternatives. I think retailers need to get very quickly involved in marketing this category not totally worrying about the individual elements but the whole category! Wholesalers also need to be proactive and see the future also.
I was at a bar last friday night and had the opportunity to try this cigar. It really packed the house. I know the bar owner was thrilled as he told me it brought folks back to his place. I bought one and all my golf buddies went crazy on the weekend wanting one as we golfed. Pretty neat product!
I’d love to see the product. Anyone know if they will be attending the RTDA show in a couple of weeks?
Ruyan America, Inc, a US joint venture partner of Ruyan Holdings Ltd of Hong Kong, announced July 10th that it will introduce the new Ruyan Vegas Freestyle e-cigar, which is said to look and feel like a premium cigar but without smoke or nicotine, at the 76th annual International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers Association tradeshow in Las Vegas, Nevada, on July 14-17.

Looking forward to seeing this new Ruyan product at the show! Was wondering how they were doing?
Have any major wholesalers or retailers taken on this product?
Back from Vegas and I must agree the Ruyan cigar is phenomenal. In speaking with the representatives they mentioned that several wholesalers had shown interest and that Liberty USA from Pittsburgh, Pa was partnering with Ruyan in the Ohio market and was launching the program at a golf outing this week. Pretty sweet idea!
I had to barter at the show to get one - it’s so cool!
I heard today that it’s true that Liberty USA will be the first top wholesaler in the country to partner with Ruyan. Heard the golf outing in Ohio was a great success. But heard there are several other wholesalers lining up.
Curious as to whether this product has any odor or scent as I’d love to use this product when outdoors hunting and shooting??

Thanks for posting Lou. Things could get interesting next week.
Two weeks ago the World Health Organization issued a release criticizing the e-cigarette at:
http://www.un.org/apps/news/story.asp?NewsID=28117&Cr=&Cr1=
which generated several news articles abroad.
I anticipate that opponents of tobacco harm reduction products and policies (i.e. led by Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids) will issue press releases denouncing the e-cigarette as a public health menace, and then petition the FDA to ban the products.
Longtime anti smoking advocate Murray Laugeson at Health New Zealand
http://www.healthnz.co.nz/Alternatives.htm
has been commissioned by Ruyan to research the e-cigarette. Laugeson’s presentation
on the e-cigarette at the SRNT meeting at Portland Oregon in March 2008 is at:

There are other very similar (or the same) nicotine inhaler products being marketed in different countries (and Ruyan is presently in litigation with some of these comanies over patent rights), including:

Pennsylvania: Ruyan America Inc. To Retail Smoking Alternatives In The State
Ruyan America, Inc. of Minneapolis, Minnesota, a joint venture partner of Ruyan Holdings Ltd. of Hong Kong, announced October 20th that the China-made Ruyan V-8 e-cigarette, the Ruyan Vegas Classic e-cigar and the Ruyan Vegas Freestyle e-cigar, all described as smoking substitutes that allow consumers to “satisfy their cravings for nicotine in places where they cannot smoke,” will be available at retail stores, including Smoker’s Express locations, in Pennsylvania. Ruyan America, Inc. President William Bartkowski said consumers will find these products to be an “effective and non-offensive way to satisfy tobacco cravings.” The company has appointed West Mifflin-based Liberty USA, a full-line distribution company that services convenience stores, as the first distributor of the products in the State. The products use atomization technology to create nicotine-infused water vapor that when inhaled satisfies smokers’ cravings for cigarettes. The water vapor does not contain any of the 4,000 chemicals found in regular cigarettes, and when exhaled, does not emit any chemical found in environmental tobacco smoke, Ruyan America said. The Ruyan V-8 e-cigarette was named the Most Innovative New Product of the Year and the Ruyan Vegas e-cigar was named the Most Marketable New Product of the Year at the 2008 Tobacco Plus Expo held in Las Vegas, Nevada on April 24-25 (PR Newswire 10/20).
I just found this today. Looks like they are getting everything in line.
Comprehensive Safety Tests Published on Ruyan Smoking Alternatives
Tests Conducted in New Zealand and Canada Find Ruyan E-cigarettes Safe; Results Apply Only to Ruyan Products
Ruyan America, Inc. today announced the publication of a report that tested the safety of its electronic smoking alternatives, specifically the nicotine cartridges that produce the smoke-like vapor that users find satisfies their desire for tobacco. The report summary states that the test results confirm that the Ruyan® E-cigarette is a safe alternative to smoking, very safe relative to cigarettes and safe in absolute terms on all measurements that were applied. The summary also notes that the report findings refer only and specifically to Ruyan products.
The tests were conducted by Dr. Murray Laugesen of Health New Zealand, Ltd, who also authored the report, and they were performed by seven leading government, university and commercial laboratories in New Zealand and Canada. Ruyan funded the tests and the report, but had no role in the design of the tests or any input with respect to the findings in the report. No completed tests were withheld from the report, which can be viewed in its entirety at http://healthnz.co.nz/RuyanCartridgeReport21-Oct-08.pdf.
Alexander Chong, CEO of Ruyan America, Inc., commented, “We are pleased to have Dr. Laugesen publish these results, validating the safety of our groundbreaking products and this new relatively new product category. But, as the summary states, these results apply only to Ruyan and its products.”
Chong went on to note how important these tests are expected to be to distributors, retailers and consumers of the products. “Given how critical ingredients like flavorings and scents are to the overall safety profile of the product, we believe that it’s very important for all manufacturers and importers of these products to undertake studies on their products and for distributors, retailers and consumers to demand this kind of information from anyone marketing or selling similar products.”
About the Products
The Ruyan V-8 E-cigarette is a sophisticated electronic device with patents granted in China and Europe and Patents Pending in the US. The device atomizes purified, liquid nicotine and produces a vapor that, when inhaled, satisfies a smoker’s craving for tobacco. The vapor contains none of the 4000 harmful chemicals commonly found in traditional cigarette smoke and none of the 40 of those chemicals considered poisonous or carcinogenic. When and if the vapor is expelled, it does not contain any of the harmful chemicals found in second hand smoke. Cartridges for the Ruyan E-cigarette are available in regular and menthol flavors. The Ruyan V-8 was named the most innovative new product at the 2008 Tobacco Plus Expo.
The Ruyan Vegas E-cigar comes in two varieties, the Classic, which contains 16 mg of nicotine, and the Freestyle, which is nicotine free. Both E-cigars produce a thick, flavorful vapor that satisfies a user’s tobacco cravings. The Ruyan Vegas E-cigar was named the most marketable new product at the 2008 Tobacco Plus Expo.
Ruyan smoking alternatives do not produce tobacco smoke or smoke of any kind and, as such, do not violate smoking bans or restrictions. Users have successfully satisfied tobacco urges in all states and in all places where smoking is otherwise restricted.
Before folks get too excited about Runyan, someone needs to ask two questions:
1) Does product meet legal defintion of a cigarette?
2) Where are the detailed chemical and toxicological data from the “mist” generated when the devices are puffed under Health Canada or similar conditions that a user may take with the device?
Ruyan products (and other similar products referred to as e-cigarettes) are not cigarettes or tobacco products, and as such, would not be affected by the proposed FDA tobacco legislation.
And since Ruyan’s isn’t claiming that its nicotine products are “smoking cessation aids”, the FDA wouldn’t be able to ban the products for making unsubstantiated smoking cessation claims.
But I wouldn’t be surprised if next year’s FDA legislation (or amendments to it) apply to Ruyan and other smokefree nicotine products that are marketed as “alternatives to cigarettes”.
Unfortunately for public health, CTFK and other anti tobacco groups that advocate the Philip Morris backed FDA legislation also oppose the marketing of any less hazardous smokefree tobacco/nicotine product to smokers, except for the marketing of nicotine gum, lozenges and patches to smokers as a way to quit smoking (as most of those anti tobacco groups receive lots of funding from those drug companies). These groups are likely to urge Waxman and Kennedy (or Kennedy’s successor) to alter the legislation to either ban products like the e-cigarette, or to ban most of their ability to market to smokers.
Meanwhile, tobacco harm reduction advocates (from both industry and public health) have been urging changes in the FDA legislation so that all tobacco and nicotine products would be reasonably and responsibly regulated by the FDA based upon product risk.
Ruyan’s best hope would be to convince Obama to use an e-cigarette instead of sneaking cigarettes or chewing nicotine gum.
